The Works Of

Nicola De Tenebrae

At The Back Of The Store, In That dimly lit corner, Next To The DVDs That Nobody Wants

This piece is a caricaturistic exploration of fashion companies’ treatment of plus sized customers. Plus ranges are rarely available in store – why is this? Brands don’t want fatness associated with their image, but they want our business, our money. In store, plus sizes are segregated, lifeless and encourage shame. This t-shirt is emblematic of the lack of style, luxury, or effort in the plus size market. You get what the brand can be bothered to make for the sake of appearing inclusive. The piece’s distorted scale offers levity to an otherwise offensive offering. Gallery patrons are invited to take the hanger from its display, walk around with it, and to try on the garment, to feel the gravity of shopping as a fat person. Do you feel all eyes on you? Do you feel awkward, embarrassed? Does it feel stylish? A celebration of style? Or perhaps a burial shroud. The brand label states ‘HIDE me BURY me’ – is this a message the fashion industry wants us to buy?

This piece measures at 2.45M in length from sleeve to sleeve.
